FAQ About the Church of Christ
In this section we will try to answer the questions we hear the most about what the Church of Christ is and Why we worship the way we do.
Firstly, only Christ has the authority to say what the church is and what Christians should teach. We are (the Church of Christ) followers of the New Testament church. We strive to follow the pattern put forth of the New Testament Christianity which is revealed in the Bible. We believe the church today should be the same as the church in the New Testament in organization, name, worship and in principles of Christian living.
We are not affiliated with any denomination. The term "church of Christ" is not used as a denominational name. It is simply a descriptive term indicating the fact that the church is the possession of Christ. The New Testament also refers to the church as:
The church of the Lord (Acts 20:28), The body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27), The house of God (1 Timothy 3:15), The church of the Firstborn (Hebrews 12:23).

These are all terms which show possession....they point to the Lord as the owner of the church.
The Church of Christ has no earthly headquarters, and no universal organization. We are an autonomous, self governing church. (Acts 14:23)

We do not follow the creeds of men. Our standard and guide is what is in the Bible.

Why are we called the "church of Christ?" Simply because we are a church that submits to the leadership and authority of Jesus Christ. It is His church, it belongs to him. Did not Jesus promise to build His church (Matthew 16:18). He did this through His death upon the cross (Acts 20: 28). The name "church of Christ" is a descriptive term used to describe our congregation as a church that submits to the will of Christ. He is our Shepherd and Overseer (1 Peter 2:25; 5:4).

Why doesn't the Church of Christ permit music in their worship services? This has been a long standing question with many saying that "the music helps us stay on key, or, "it helps cover up my mistakes, I just don't have a "singing" voice." How can God Not like the beautiful music?
A simply stated answer is, the reason for not having music in our worship to God is because we feel we are to worship according to God's instructions in the New Testament; the New Testament leaves instrumental music out; if we used the mechanical instrument we would have to do so without God's authority.

You can read every verse in the New Testament on the subject of music in worship below:
1. "When they had sung an hymn, they went out into the Mount of Olives" (Matthew 26:30
2. "At midnight, Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God" (Acts16:25)
3. "I will sing with the spirit, I will sing with the understanding also"" (1 Corinthians 14:15)
4. "Speaking to yourselves in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord" (Ephesians 5:19)
5. " Teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual song, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord" (Colossians 3:16)
6. "In the midst of the church, I will sing thy praise" (Hebrews2:12)
7. "Is any merry, let him sing psalms" (James 5:13)
The mention of mechanical instruments of music is conspicuously absent in these passages. There are two kinds of commands given in the Bible: Generic and Specific.
Music is a generic term, because there is more than one kind. If the Lord had commanded, "Make music," we could comply with the command by vocal, instrumental, or a combination of both. But singing is a specific term. So, as the scriptures all point to singing, this restricts the music to vocal singing.
